How to Take a Vacation and Have Your Best Sales Month Ever

This last September my handmade business had its best sales month to date.

And this happened despite the fact that I spent a good chunk of the month away from the business, taking a European vacation.

taking a vacation in germany
At the Cologne Cathedral in Germany.

Now I’m not telling you this because I want to be all braggy.

(Okay, well maybe a little.)

I’m telling you this because I want you to know that it’s totally possible to run a successful handmade business and give yourself a break once in awhile.

But it’s going to take some careful planning on your part.

The main thing you need in order for your business to run without you is systems.

Once you have your systems in place, you can hand off the daily work of your handmade business to your assistants, while you get to work on the big picture stuff, and, do some globe-trotting if you so desire.

The other thing I would suggest you do (and this is what I did too), is warn your audience before you take off.

A couple of weeks before your trip (or stay-cation if that’s more your jam), send out e-mail and social media notifications warning your peeps that they won’t be able to put in any special requests like custom order while you’re away. This will get most of them to order earlier than they otherwise would have, so you you won’t miss out on those sales. This warning may even encourage some purchases that may not have otherwise happened because of the scarcity factor of a time-limit.

Then, a week before you actually leave on vacation, hand over all of your systems to your employees. This is so you can test everything to make sure it’s all set up for the real thing. You will be able to fix any snags before you take off and become more or less unreachable.

While I was on vacation, I checked in via wi-fi for a few minutes just once a day at whatever hotel we were staying at that night. This was enough time to respond to any questions that came up from my employees or from customers that my assistants were unable to answer for me. Other than that, I was able to fully enjoy my vacation while the sales kept rolling in.

Now if you’re not sure how to find employees, or set up systems for them to use, stay tuned my friend. Because I’m working on something AWESOME for you right now that is going to give you the complete blueprint on everything you need to turn your handmade business into a success-driving machine.
